Heartland Lodge is hosted by Jim and Mary Powell who invite you to share their stunning home as friends rather than guests. Mary and Jim came to Heartland Lodge in 2007, after many years of teaching in New Zealand and overseas. For over twenty years, they came with their family to enjoy holidays in Twizel in all seasons of the year. They were drawn by safe swimming and the shady trees at Lake Ruataniwha, the proximity of Mount Cook National Park, excellent flyfishing, clear air, mountain views and dry climate. They are only too pleased to share the delights of their home with guests.
Mary comes from a Southland farming family, growing up on a small farm outside Invercargill. In her teaching career she has taught all ages from six to sixty, specialising in Literacy and English as a Second Language. When not looking after guests, she enjoys gardening, cooking, films, reading, handcrafts, walking, watching local wildlife and being with friends and family. Jim came to New Zealand from Wales, deciding to settle here after meeting Mary. He taught Horticulture and Science in high schools for many years. He is a keen flyfisher and fly tier, enjoys woodworking, walking, theatre, music making and watercolour painting.
They have two sons in their twenties who follow their parents’ interests in music and the outdoors. Mary and Jim regularly travel to Wales to see family and friends and have visited Australia, North America, Asia and Europe.
